Then get out your 8×8 baking dish and cut up a few thin slices of the butter and place them in the bottom of the baking dish.

When that is done, pop the dish in the oven while it preheats to melt the butter.

Then in a large mixing bowl combine the flour, salt, baking soda, and sugar and mix it all together.

Easy Pan Butter Biscuits Recipe (6)

Now carefully pour the buttermilk into the flour mixture until the flour is just moist.

DO NOT OVER MIX the dough. It will make for some tough biscuits.

After you are done mixing the dough, remove the dish from the oven.

Easy Pan Butter Biscuits Recipe (7)

Now pour the dough into the pan on top of the melted butter and use your hands to spread it out evenly in the dish.

Be careful as the dish will be warm.

The butter will push up on top of the biscuit dough, which is exactly what you want to happen.

Once it’s spread out, use a sharp knife and cut the dough into nine pieces (3 cut across and 3 cut down).

By doing this you will have biscuits that come out easier and get immersed in the butter!

Then put the dish in the oven for 20-25 minutes. Start checking the biscuits after 20 minutes.

Once they are slightly golden brown, pull them out and enjoy them!

The Best Flour For Making Biscuits

For this recipe we love to use all-purpose flour, however, there are other options out there. So what is the best flour to use?

Make Your Own Buttermilk!

If you don’t have any buttermilk in your fridge, no worries! You can make your own.

To make your own buttermilk:

Pour 1 Tablespoon of white vinegar into the bottom of a 1 cup measurer.

Fill the rest of that 1 cup measurer with milk.

Carefully mix together and let sit for 4-5 minutes.

The rest time gives it a minute to slightly curdle, which gives it a little bit of a buttermilk texture and taste.

If you don’t have white vinegar, you can also use lemon juice mixed with milk (just follow the same instructions).

Ingredients

  • ½ cup unsalted butter (1 stick)
  • cups all-purpose flour
  • Tablespoons baking powder
  • 2 Tablespoons sugar
  • teaspoons salt
  • cup buttermilk (see note below)

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 450 degrees.

  • Slice the butter into a couple of thin slices and spread in the bottom of an 8×8" baking dish.

  • Place the butter in the baking dish into the oven while it preheats to allow the butter to melt.

  • In a mixing bowl, mix together flour, baking powder, sugar, and salt.

  • Carefully pour in the buttermilk, mixing until the flour mixture is just moistened (be careful not to overmix!).

  • Remove melted butter pan from the oven.

  • Place the dough in the melted butter pan and spread it evenly in the pan with your fingers. As you spread the dough out to the corners, the butter will start to surround the dough and flow on top of the dough (which is what you want!).

  • Cut the dough into 9 equal squares (you don't have to do this step, but it makes it easier to pull apart later and allows the butter to soak into all the edges of each piece).

  • Bake for 20-25 minutes (start checking at 20 minutes) or until the biscuits are golden brown.

  • Serve hot with honey butter or your favorite toppings.

Notes

These made the perfect side dish for any soup or for sausage gravy and biscuits!

Is it better to use butter or Crisco for biscuits? ›

Crisco may be beneficial for other baking applications, but for biscuit making, butter is the ultimate champion!

Should you butter biscuits before baking? ›

Once the biscuits are cut and on the cookie sheet, I brush the tops with melted butter before and after baking. If you have never made biscuits from scratch before, you need to know that biscuit dough is one of those doughs that “feels right” when you are kneading it or rolling it out.

Which liquid makes the best biscuits? ›

Just as important as the fat is the liquid used to make your biscuits. Our Buttermilk Biscuit recipe offers the choice of using milk or buttermilk. Buttermilk is known for making biscuits tender and adding a zippy tang, so we used that for this test.

Is there a way to bake on a stove top? ›

Stove top baking saves time by making it simple to prepare dessert while making meals. So easy and quick, just mix up any batter, pour into the prepared pan, and then place on the back burner using low heat. A yummy warm dessert is waiting for you after the meal.

Is buttermilk or heavy cream better for biscuits? ›

Heavy cream provides rich butterfat that gives the biscuits tenderness and flavor, as well as moisture from its water content. The formula requires minimal mixing, reducing the risk of too much gluten development.

How to make biscuits rise higher? ›

Conclusion: More baking powder makes the biscuit rise more (imagine that!). About 1 tablespoon of baking powder per 2 cups of flour seems to be about the right amount, but even halving or doubling this amount should not ruin your biscuits.

What does milk do in biscuits? ›

In baking, it moistens batter or dough, and adds protein, color and flavor to baked goods. The most common form of milk in baking is non-fat dry milk (NFDM), which is dehydrated skim milk.

What is the secret to a good biscuit? ›

Use Cold Butter for Biscuits

For flaky layers, use cold butter. When you cut in the butter, you have coarse crumbs of butter coated with flour. When the biscuit bakes, the butter will melt, releasing steam and creating pockets of air. This makes the biscuits airy and flaky on the inside.

Is it better to use milk or buttermilk in biscuits? ›

What's the Difference Between Buttermilk Biscuits and Regular Biscuits? As the names might suggest, regular biscuits do not contain buttermilk, while these do. Regular biscuits are typically prepared with milk or water instead. Buttermilk adds a nice tang to the biscuit flavor and helps them rise better.

Should you chill biscuit dough before baking? ›

But if you chill your pan of biscuits in the fridge before baking, not only will the gluten relax (yielding more tender biscuits), the butter will harden up. And the longer it takes the butter to melt as the biscuits bake, the more chance they have to rise high and maintain their shape. So, chill... and chill.

What kind of flour do southerners use for biscuits? ›

SouthernKitchen.com says, "Ask any Southern chef or sagacious biscuit grandma and you'll hear a pattern emerge: they all swear by White Lily flour."

What makes Southern biscuits so good? ›

Here's the Reason Biscuits in the South Really Are Better

The not-so-secret ingredient they rely upon is soft wheat flour. Soft wheat thrives in temperate, moist climates like that of the mid-Atlantic, so cooks in those areas have had access to its special flour for a long time.

What type of flour is best for biscuits? ›

White wheat in general is around 9-12% protein, while the hard reds are 11-15%. As far as brands of flour, White Lily “all-purpose” flour has been my go-to for biscuit making. It's a soft red winter wheat, and the low protein and low gluten content keep biscuits from becoming too dense.

Preheated skillet to 400f, added butter then 20 minutes at 350f.

How do you cook canned biscuits? ›
