Why won't my tiller spin? ›

A broken drive belt, bad transmission or problem with the clutch cable can prevent a tiller's wheels and tines from turning.

You can adjust the working depth of your tiller by adjusting the skid shoes. Generally speaking, the larger the tiller the greater the maximum working depth. In a large vegetable garden, however, tilling to a depth of no more than 6 inches (15.24 cm) should be sufficient.

Medium-sized gardens are manageable with a 5- to 6-horsepower tiller ($500 to $800), and big gardens of more than 5,000 square feet call for a tiller with at least a 6-horsepower engine ($800 to $2,000).

The Rototiller Won't Move Forward

Issues with the drive wheels can result from a worn or loose belt, a transmission problem, or a broken drive engagement cable.

Reverse rotating tines, like those on the RT3062R, rotate on the shaft in the opposite direction the tractor is traveling. Consequently, a tiller with reverse rotating tines requires a bit more horsepower to get the job done. But the reverse action makes tilling into harder surfaces easier.

Put the kill switch in the proper position of the tiller. Press and hold (≥ 2 secs) the “POWER” button to power on the system. Turn the throttle to start the outboard motor.

Check the depth stake setting and adjust it for the type of soil you're cultivating. Lower the depth stake to till at a 1-inch depth when using the tiller on soil for the first time or when breaking up hard soil. Also use the 1-inch depth setting to break up sod for shallow cultivation.

For a tiller with a bladed wheel, push the tiller forward while it's in the ground. This will rotate the blades and till the soil. For a tiller without the wheel, twist the tiller as you pull it straight out of the ground. Move the tiller over to an adjacent patch of soil, insert the spikes and repeat.

Front-Tine Tillers are easier to maneuver. If a job is proving too tough for a cultivator to handle, a front-tine tiller can be a good tool to try. Front-tine tillers work best with loosely packed soil in small gardens.

For most jobs, a tiller depth between four and six inches will prove ideal, as you won't encounter tree roots or rocks which can damage your rototiller. Once you have prepared the correct settings, it's time to till the area. If the soil is compact and hard, start tilling with the shallowest setting.

When not to use a tiller? ›

It's not a good idea to use a tiller immediately before planting. This is because tilling introduces many air pockets into the soil which can result in less than ideal seed germination.

Make sure that the fuel is still fresh. If the rotary tiller has not been used for months, the fuel might have deteriorated and/or clogged some parts of the carburettor, thereby stopping or reducing the supply of petrol/mixture. In this case, empty and clean the tank and carburettor, then add fresh, new fuel.

Forward rotary tillers, till in the direction of the tractor while reverse tines work in the opposite direction. What does this mean for your tillage though? A rotary tiller with forward facing tines won't reach as far into the ground as a reverse tiller, but It will have a finer texture.

Most times, the rear-tines spin in the opposite direction of travel to provide more friction, which results in deeper digging. These are called counter-rotating tines. You can also go with one that has standard rotating tines, meaning the blades spin in a forward direction.
