NATION Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter dies at 57 NEW YORK (AP) Hall of Fame catcher Gary Carter, whose single for the New York Mets in the 1986 World Series touched off one of the most improbable rallies in baseball, died Thursday He was 57. Carter was diagnosed with a malignant brain tumor last May, two weeks after finishing his second season as coach at Palm Beach Atlantic University in Florida.

I am deeply saddened to tell you all that my precious dad went to be with Jesus today at 4:10 p.m., Carters daughter Kim-my Bloemers wrote on the family website. Carter was an 11-time All-Star and three-time Gold Glove winner. His bottom-of-the-lOth single in Game 6 of the 1986 World Series helped the New York Mets mount a charge against the Boston Red Sox and eventually beat them. Carter was known as much for his effervescent personality as his talents. He earned his nickname as an eager teen in his first major league camp and the label stuck for the rest of his career, and beyond.

His nickname The Kid captured how Gary approached life," the Mets said in a statement. He did everything with enthusiasm and with gusto on and off the field. His smile was infectious. He was a Hall of Famer in everything he did. Carter played nearly two decades with the Mets, Montreal, San Francisco and the Los Angeles Dodgers.

He led the Expos to their only playoff berth and was the first player enshrined in Cooperstown wearing an Expos cap. 3 I suggetled held at 11 a.m. Saturday Feb. 18, at McGinnis-Chambers FuneralHome, Bettendorf. Burial will be at Pine Hill Cemetery, Davenport.

Debates From Page A6 of five debates before the primary two of which are televised, she said. We are in the middle of a 14-county listening tour. What people are talking to me about are jobs.

Social Security and Medicare and how we are going to balance the budget Not a single person has asked me about the number of debates we are doing, she said. Were talking about the issues every day, and we look forward to continuing to do so in the upcoming debates. Officials at WTVP TV in Peoria confirmed all three candidates have agreed to a live debate 7 to 8:30 p.m. March 15. It also will air on WQPT-TV in the Quad-Cities and be carried on WVTK-FM and archived online at wtvp.org.

Mr. Gaulrapp said Ms. Bustos declined at least two debates he and Me Aguilar had agreed to: one planned for March 3 by KWQC and another planned for March 8 by the Mercer County Democratic Party Neither of those debates will happen, he said, because Ms. Bustos declined. Although not at Wednesdays news conference, Mr.

Aguilar backed Mr. Gaul-rapps assertions. We need to remember as candidates that were here to serve the people, i he said. If the people want to know how we stand on the issues in a public forum like a debate, we should respect their wishes. George and I have accepted every single debate or forum that we have been invited to, and I dont understand why Cheri refuses to debate, he added.

Is she hiding something? She is backing off and I dont understand why People need to ask her why she wont debate. The winner of the three-way Democratic primary will move on to the general election Nov. 6 to face independent candidate Eric Reyes, of Rock Island, and incumbent U.S. Rep. Bobby Schilling, R-Colona.
