I agree with you. I think "sitting" sounds better and "sat" does sound a bit strange.
In the UK, apparently, the word "sat" is often used instead of "sitting."
The actress who plays Teresa is from the UK. I think she probably messed up that part of her line and forgot she was supposed to be speaking in the American dialect ;)
