Update: Police say a large rock has been recovered from the scene of an incident along Highway 1 in Burnaby that sent a driver to hospital in critical condition.

Burnaby RCMP had said earlier that an “unknown object” crashed through the car windshield Thursday morning.

The Mounties say it happened at about 11:24 a.m. near Burnaby’s Willingdon exit.

Highway Patrol officers had been searching the area for the object.

Police are seeking witnesses and dashcam footage from the time of the crash.

There was no update on the condition of the driver later Thursday.

Original story:

Police are warning of major traffic delays due to a serious collision in the westbound lanes of Highway 1 in Burnaby.

“Expect major delays on Highway 1 and throughout nearby areas in Burnaby due to a serious collision investigation near Highway 1 and Willingdon Avenue,” said Burnaby RCMP in an update to X on Thursday around 2:45 p.m.

“Please plan an alternate route. It is unknown when Highway 1 will completely re-open.”

According to Drive BC, two lanes of westbound traffic have reopened but the delays will continue to be significant.

No further details are available about the collision although there are some reports that a heavy item went through a driver’s windshield.
