Vegan Potato Tots – Cheesy Tatar Tots recipe with potatoes (2024)

Vegan Potato Tots –Cheesy Tatar Tots recipe with potatoes (1)

The most perfect, cheesy, crispy and soft Vegan Potato Tots. Made simply with cooked potatoes, flaxseeds, water, half cup of vegan cheese, turmeric, a gently touch of baking powder, sea salt and black pepper.

These homemade tater tots are so delicious and pretty healthy too. Try also to make these with carrots, broccoli or other vegetables. You just need to roll the mashed potatoes in Panko bread crumbs for a crispy on the outside and soft on the inside. I cook mine in 1 cup of oil in a saucepan – but you can oven bake these too. Once the tots are done (or out of the oven), drizzle with salt, pepper and your favorite herbs.

Serve your crispy potato cheesy tater tots with mayo, ketchup –or just simply enjoy them warm right out of the oven as is. A great warm winter appetizer, side dish, or midday snack. Just be aware that these are very addictive.. I couldn’t stop myself from eating half of the tray.

So hopefully they will be a very popular treat that all kids would loveand adults will ask for the recipe too.
The ingredient list are quite simple too. You just need some preparation time for rolling and frying.
I’ve added some pictures below so you can see exactly how I make this recipe!

Cheesy Vegan Potato Tots:

Serves: 30-32 x Tots

Prep Time: 40Cooking Time: 15

Simple homemade vegan potato tots. Made with vegan cheese, potatoes and turmeric. Ultimate salty snack or midday recipe for kids too!

Ingredients

  • 600g. Potatoes
  • 1 tablespoon of Flax seeds
  • 4 tablespoon of Water
  • 1 teaspoon of Turmeric powder
  • 1 teaspoon of Baking powder
  • 1/2 cup of Vegan Cheese
  • Salt and pepper
  • 2 cups of Panko bread crumbs
  • 1 cup of oil for frying

Instructions

1

Peel and cook the potatoes in around 20 minutes in boiling water until soft. Allow to cool. Meanwhile mix flax seeds with water and set aside.

2

Place the potatoes in a medium-size bowl and mash well with a fork. Add turmeric powder, baking powder, vegan cheese and the flax seeds + water. Just add some more cheese if you want them extra cheesy). Drizzle with salt and pepper. Mix it all very well together. The potato mix will be sticky and wet.

3

Spoon around 1 teaspoon of potato dough and add into a tray / bowl with bread crumbs. I used Panko bread crumbs. Cover them carefully and shape in squares like mine (or which shape you'd prefer). See pictures below. The shapes does not need to be perfect.

4

Cook the potato tots in oil in a small saucepan. Carefully add in the tots 3-4 each time. Leave to cook until crispy and golden, moving and flipping halfway through. Once cooked place on a plate with paper towels to drain the oil.

5

Serve them directly with ketchup, mayo or mustard sauce and additional herbs, if desired. Don't forget to drizzle with salt and pepper.

Healthier version – Baked in the oven, no oil used:

If you don’t want to fry the tots, you can easily roast the potatoes in the oven. This works just as well, it just takes a little more prep time. Just remember before baking to brush (or spray) each tot with some olive oil. This will ensure a nice golden coloring on the outside. Then transfer to the oven and bake for about 15 minutes. Then flip them around and bake another 10-15 minutes or until golden and crispy.

How to make homemade Potato Tots:

These vegan tatar tots can be made with sweet potatoes too which gives a golden and beautiful color too! I had a big leftover of potatoes but other soft vegetables would also be good… I actually think that carrots would be great too! The turmeric gives a cheesy and golden color – and a rich taste too. But you can easily add other favorite spices like chili, paprika, thyme etc.

  1. Mash the potatoes. I just used a fork but you can use whatever you like. Add the flaxseed/water, turmeric, some vegan cheese (just add more if you want them extra cheesy), some baking powder, salt and pepper.
  2. Mix it all very well together…
  3. Spoon around 1 teaspoon of potato dough and add into a tray / bowl with bread crumbs. I used Panko bread crumbs. Cover them carefully and shape in squares like mine (or which shape you’d prefer).
  4. The potato tots are now ready to cook!

Cook the tatar tots in 1 cup of oil in a saucepan. I use to cook in the smallest saucepan I have (so I don’t use too much oil). Then you can cook 3-4 tots at the same time. Once cooked leave the tots on a plate with paper towels to drain the oil. Drizzle with salt and pepper. Serve them directly with ketchup, mayo or mustard sauce and additional herbs, if desired.
