We have a few friends from Cubaand my friend Diana made herCubansandwiches for me and the hubby when we were going on a road trip. We stopped at a state park and had a little picnic. They were fantastic and once I got back she taught me how to make them.

There are two steps in making this authentic Cubansandwich recipe. The first is to cook a Boston pork butt, also known as pork shoulder, in your Crock Pot with a bottle of mojo criollo sauce. I have tried a few mojo brands but I like GoyaAuthentic Cuban Sandwich Recipe | Miss Information (3) the best it really has more flavor and spices than others. The sauce soaks in and flavors the pork until it’s so tender it just falls apart and it’s AMAZING! The smell in your house will drive you cray-cray as my 9-year-old says. Once it’s done though it’s time to build this sandwich.

This authentic Cuban sandwich is all about layers.

There’salayer of pork, a layer of ham, a layer of Swiss cheese, and thinly sliced pickles. Get the sandwich sliced dill pickles at the grocery store and make it easier on yourself. Next, you have to press and grill the sandwich to get the cheese all melted and gooey. I use my panini pressAuthentic Cuban Sandwich Recipe | Miss Information (5) but you can just as easily take a brick and wrap it in foil to use on a grill panAuthentic Cuban Sandwich Recipe | Miss Information (6) or in a skillet.

Once it’s cooked, serve with a bowl of mojo to dip the sandwich in.

Please donot skip this step, because it makes a huge difference! I promise you’ll love it, and it’s the reason you have to buy 2 bottles of Mojo sauce!

Now I am going to let you in on my little secret. I am not really a big fan of pickles, so when I make this recipe,I substitute hot pepper ringsAuthentic Cuban Sandwich Recipe | Miss Information (7) for the pickles! It’s sooooooo good, and it gives it a little more kick! Give either a try – I promise you won’t be disappointed!

  3. Since relations with Cuba are cooling I thought I'd break out this recipe I pinned some time ago. This was soooooo good, makes me want to grow out my beard, throw on same green fatigues and yell "¡Viva la Revolución!". I made mine with Ciabatta as my local grocery store were out of italian bread and no cuban bread. Still perfect. Thanks for this recipe, and thank Diana

  4. It's nearly impossible to find mojo up here (MN). I see that you linked to a mojo recipe (yay!) but in your cubano recipe you don't actually have a measurement for how much mojo to use, you just say a bottle. Can you tell me how many oz, or cups of mojo I should use if I'm making it from scratch?

    1. Hey Sarah, the bottle equals about 4 cups!
